Grasshopper Warbler - Romsey on Aug 28th 2011. The scarcest bird that was ringed today! These little skulkers are rarely seen on passage unless they are pulled out of a mist net.
Dunlin (left) Little Stint (right) - Keyhaven Marshes Aug 27th 2011. Let us show you how to pick out the scarce from the common species at Keyhaven Marshes. Every Saturday through the Autumn, we will be there! Book to join Tim on his walk and improve on your ID skills . ’Wader ID’ |
Cetti’s Warbler - Romsey on Aug 28th 2011. Another very elusive species. A recent colonist that has been hard hit during the last couple of harsh winters. This was only one of two trapped today!
Sedge Warbler - Romsey on Aug 28th 2011. Out of 120 birds ringed today, Sedge Warblers were the commonest species. Soon these birds will depart for West Africa, the weights ranged between 9-18 grams; so some were more ready than others

WRYNECK - Hook-with-Warsash, Aug 29th 2011. A few of this ‘Scandinavian Woodpecker’ are recorded each year each autumn in Hants and are often very elusive and difficult to see! With patience and a little luck you occasionally get a ‘poser’ like this one—a real autumn treat for birders!! Photo by Ian Williamson. |

SPARROWHAWK - Midanbury, Southampton, Sep 4th 2011. This little beauty brightened up a rainy Sunday afternoon by visiting the observers’ garden. Not such good day for the food prey item though!! Photo by Ian Williamson. |
GREY PHALAROPE - Keyhaven Marshes, Sep 10th 2011. Breeding in Iceland and wintering off the west coast of Africa, these birds are often displaced by gales each autumn and can then be seen at close quarters; often appearing quite tame! Photo by Ian Williamson

White Wagtail - Pennington Marshes Sep 17th 2011. A scarce-ish passage migrant that can be found on the coast this time of year. This is the continental cousin of ‘our’ Pied Wagtail, with a paler mantle and cleaner flanks is always worth a look! |
BAIRD’S SANDPIPER - Pennington Marshes, Sep 17th 2011. Smaller than Dunlin, this American Wader is an example of the occasional prize found when scanning through wader flocks in Autumn! The 7th record for Hampshire; no doubt over this side of the ‘pond’ thanks to Hurricane Katia last week. Photo by Simon Ingram. |

SABINE’S GULL (juvenile) Sturt Pond, Milford-on-sea, Sep 19th 2011. Breeding in the High Arctic of North America and wintering off SW Africa. These birds can be displaced by autumn gales, although not annual, 2011 has been a good year with several recorded so far this autumn. This was 1 of 2 present at this site. Photo by Ian Williamson

SEMI-PALMATED SANDPIPER - Pennington Marshes, Sep 24th 2011. The same size as Little Stint, this American Wader was even rarer in the County than last weeks Baird Sandpiper! The 4th record for Hampshire, with the most recent in 2006 continuing an excellent run of birds at this site! Found by the dedicated patchworkers, Tim Parminter, Alan Lewis and Marc Moody.
